When Anxiety Whispers “Where is God?” Finding Peace in the Storm

Finding God in anxiety - peaceful scene showing divine presence during anxious moments and spiritual comfort

The 3 AM Truth About Anxiety

If you landed on this page with your heart racing and your mind spiraling, you might be struggling with anxiety. I want you to know something: I was in your exact spot just three days ago.

Anxiety does not knock politely. It barges in uninvited, bringing its favorite companions: doubt, fear, and that crushing question that echoes in the darkness: “Where is God in all of this?”

What God Sees When You Are Anxious

Let’s be honest about something that many of us are afraid to admit. Sometimes anxiety makes us feel like spiritual failures. We wonder if our racing hearts mean our faith is weak. We question whether our worry has somehow pushed God away.

Have I prayed wrong?
Is my faith not strong enough?
Why can’t I just trust more?

These questions can feel heavier than the anxiety itself. Now we are not only anxious, but also anxious about being anxious.

The Scripture That Changed Everything

During one particularly overwhelming week, when I was drowning in worry about an upcoming event that felt impossibly big, I stumbled across Psalm 34:17-18. But this time, I did not just read it. I absorbed it:

“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Read that again. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

Not disappointed in. Not frustrated with. Not stepping back from.

He is close.

A Practical Moment of Peace (Try This Now)

Before we go further, I invite you to try something with me:

  1. Place your hand on your heart and feel it beating.
  2. Take three deep breaths, counting to four on each inhale and exhale.
  3. Whisper these words: “God is close to me right now, even in this anxiety.”
  4. Notice any small shift in how you feel. Even the tiniest change counts.

This is not about making anxiety disappear instantly. It is about creating a small pocket of peace in the storm.

What God Sees When You Are Anxious

Here is what I have learned through my own journey with anxiety. God does not see a failing Christian when you are worried. He sees His beloved child who needs comfort.

He sees:

  • Every 2 AM Google search for “how to stop anxiety”
  • Every prayer that felt too jumbled to make sense
  • Every tear you have hidden from others
  • Every brave step you have taken despite the fear

And in response to all of it, He draws closer, not further away.

Your Anxiety Survival Toolkit

While we rest in God’s presence, here are some practical companions to your faith journey through anxiety.

Spiritual Anchors:

  • Keep Psalm 34:17-18 as your phone wallpaper this week.
  • Write one worry on paper each night, then place it in a “God box” (any container will do).
  • Play worship music softly in the background during moments of anxiety.

Physical Helps:

  • Practice the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique (5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you can touch, 2 you smell, 1 you taste).
  • Take a walk while praying. Movement helps process anxiety.
  • Keep a glass of cold water nearby. Sipping slowly can calm your nervous system.

You Are Not Walking Alone

If you have made it to the end of this post, I want to leave you with this truth. Your anxiety does not make you less loved, less faithful, or less worthy of God’s presence.

In fact, it might just be the very thing that draws you closer to experiencing His comfort in ways you never imagined possible.
